The verdiblanco club has offset its GHG emissions generated during the 2020/2021 season after successfully measuring and registering its corporate carbon footprint for the third consecutive year in the Carbon Footprint, Compensation, and CO2 Absorption Projects Registry of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITERD).

Real Betis Balompié, already in the process of calculating its fourth year of study 2021/2022, becomes the first LaLiga football club to calculate, reduce, and register its Carbon Footprint for the third consecutive year. The club wanted to go further and has become a carbon-neutral team by offsetting all of its emissions through the acquisition of United Nations credits.

The project selected to offset its carbon footprint generated during the 2020/2021 season is located in the town of Unión Hidalgo, Mexico. It is a renewable electricity generation project through the construction and operation of a 90 MW wind farm called Piedra Larga Wind Farm.

Among the benefits of this project are the minimization of impacts on resources and the environment and the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by replacing electricity generated from fossil fuels with renewable energy, which is a free, abundant, and inexhaustible resource. Additionally, it generates a positive social and economic impact locally through job creation and training, as well as the growth of industry and the development of technologies.

Since the 2018/2019 season, the first in which Real Betis Balompié measured its environmental impact, it has managed to reduce its carbon footprint by 35.56%, thus betting on continuity in this decarbonization line and the application of good environmental practices that are being recognized by different organizations worldwide.

In this way, Real Betis Balompié – through its Forever Green Sustainability Program – continues to advance in its strategy to be the most sustainable football club on the planet through its various environmental initiatives. To achieve this, the club has the support of its trusted sustainability consultant, Ecoterrae (https://www.ecoterrae.com/) a company with which it has been actively working for several years in its fight against climate change and which has conducted the EINF (Non-Financial Information Statement) and the carbon footprint of the organization and the Forever Green initiative matches, accompanying and advising the verdiblanco club throughout its journey towards sustainability.
