The world of sustainable sport is transforming, and a clear example of this evolution is the Acciona Open de España, a high-level competition that has managed to position itself as a benchmark in sustainability.
This year, water has been at the heart of the conversation, underlining the tournament’s commitment to reducing consumption and protecting natural resources.
During a roundtable organized by EL ESPAÑOL and Acciona, experts from different areas discussed the key actions that are being taken to ensure that sporting events of this magnitude not only respect the environment, but also promote it.
From the application of advanced irrigation technologies to offsetting the water and carbon footprint of players, each edition of the tournament adds new measures to reduce environmental impact.

Jesús Barrera, Director of Sports at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, stressed that “if we have sustainability as a priority, it will help to get more people interested in golf”, dismantling the myth that this sport is not aligned with environmental protection.
Pedro Oriol, a professional golfer, also highlighted the ecological value of golf courses, where flora and fauna find a less hostile environment than in other habitats, which reinforces their role in environmental conservation.
In addition to practices around water, energy efficiency has been key.
From the use of solar panels to the elimination of plastics, the tournament has taken a comprehensive approach.
Joaquín Mollinedo, Acciona’s General Director of Communication, stressed that the aim is to “make ‘water positive’ events, compensating beyond the water that is consumed”.
In this sense, collaboration with all stakeholders, from sponsors to organisers, has been essential to make the Acciona Open de España a sustainable event.
